RS 01702.520 Public Health Service (PHS) Commissioned Officers - Description

PHS consists of civilian employees and a commissioned officer corps. This officer corps is composed of professional and technical personnel who are in a uniformed branch of the PHS. Members of the corps have military rank, and are subject to many military privileges and regulations. The corps has regular and reserve members. When other services were covered by SS in 1957, the commissioned officers of PHS were also covered.
