In some unusual situations, it may be necessary, because of the applicant's physical
condition or possible risk to health, to have the applicant examined or interviewed
at home or transported to the place of examination. All expenses, including overnight
accommodations, when required, will be reimbursed by SSA.
If the circumstances require that a companion accompany the applicant to the place
of examination, the travel and related expenses of such companion will also be payable
by SSA. Similarly, travel and related expenses including per diem, incurred by Foreign
Service personnel in the performance of a field examination or other requested service,
shall be chargeable to SSA.
Any travel in connection with such cases shall be performed in accordance with 6 FAM
100. When travel in connection with a proposed examination would entail substantial
costs, however, the post shall consider all alternative means of obtaining the information
and respective costs.
