Except for active duty service members and active-duty family members, an individual
who is entitled to Medicare Part A must also be enrolled in Medicare Part B to remain
eligible for TRICARE.
Age 65 and Older: If an individual is eligible for TRICARE and entitled to Medicare Part A and enrolled
in Medicare Part B, the individual is automatically covered under TRICARE For Life
(TFL), with no enrollment forms or enrollment fees required. Medicare is the primary
payer and TRICARE is secondary, generally paying Medicare deductibles and coinsurance
for services covered by both programs. This coordination of benefits usually eliminates
the need for the individual to file claims. Retired service members and eligible family
members who become entitled to Medicare Part A and are enrolled in Medicare Part B
are automatically covered by TFL and may no longer enroll in other TRICARE plans.
Under Age 65: If an individual has Medicare Part A due to a disability and they have Medicare
Part B, they don’t have to disenroll from Tricare Prime or the US Family Heath
Plan.
An individual who is not eligible for Medicare Part A may remain eligible for TRICARE.
Active-duty family members who are entitled to Medicare Part A are not required to
have Medicare Part B to keep TRICARE while the sponsor remains on active duty, but
Medicare Part B is required to continue TRICARE after the sponsor retires.
