RM 03258.004 SSA-L99-C1 Returned by Recipient
An SSA-L99-C1 previously furnished to an individual and returned as, or with, correspondence
will show, in addition to pension information certain SSA codes for internal use.
This information can be of assistance in obtaining additional information and can
also show how other individuals or components previously handled the case.
A ten digit Document Control Number (DCN) is furnished in the lower left corner of
the SSA-L99-C1. It represents the last two digits of the Year for which the pension
information was reported and the Pension Block, Unit, and Page Sequence Number in
which the Schedule SSA was processed. It is sometimes necessary to refer to the microfilm
copy of Schedules SSA known as the Deferred Benefits Microfilm. This microfilm is
maintained in the Earnings Finance and Enumeration Unit (EFEU) and is filed according
to the first 5 digits of the DCN (Year and Pension Block Number).
NOTE: Starting in calendar year 2008, instead of using microfilm, SSA began scanning and
storing ERISA data (including the Schedule SSA) in the Automated Image Retrieval System
(AIRS), a tool that allows the Division of Earnings and Business Services staff to
access some of the ERISA images via the Earnings Specialists’ desktop. Therefore,
access AIRS via the desktop in order to access Schedule SSAs that involve data from
2008 to the present. In addition, SSA is in the process of converting ERISA microfilm
data prior to 2008 to AIRS and eventually all data will be available via AIRS.
