GN 00302.930 Claimant is an Alien Who Arrived After 6/30/1924 — Sources of Immigration and Alien Registration Records

A. General

For a claimant who is an alien who arrived after 6/30/1924, INS records that may be obtained are:

  • Arrival information (including visas and supporting documents), and

  • An alien registration record.

B. Locations of records

Visas and birth records or other supporting evidence were required for all arrivals after 6/30/1924. The INS district office having jurisdiction over immigration matters at the alien's place of residence maintains the:

  • Visa (which contains month, day, and year of birth), and

  • Supporting evidence, and

  • Alien registration form.

C. Obtaining information from records

There should be little difficulty in obtaining age information from the arrival records from the INS district office in these cases.

Occasionally, the INS district office will furnish age information from the alien registration record rather than from the arrival records. This may be because the claimant did not specify the desired age information record or because in a few cases, the visa and other arrival information had not been associated with the alien files. In the latter event, if the claimant has specifically requested age from the arrival record, the INS district office would have attempted to obtain the information from the Verification Center.
