A. Policy for requesting birth, marriage, divorce, and death records

Turkey has a single, nationwide repository of civil registration records. Records are held at the the Family Registry Office.

B. Procedure for requesting birth, marriage, divorce, or death records

1. Office to contact

Contact the Family Registry Office for birth, marriage, and death records.

Turkish Consular office having jurisdiction over the claimant's residence.

Parents can also go to the Directorate of Civil Affairs in the area in which they live for birth records. Contact the district court where the divorce was granted.

2. Birth records

Include the following information in requests for birth records:

  • The Family Register

  • Full name at birth, including the correct spelling of their Turkish name

  • Date of birth

  • Place of birth

  • Parent's Turkish name

  • Original registration place by

    • Province

    • County (District)

    • Township (Sub district)

    • Village

    • Street (very important in large cities, e.g., Istanbul)

    • House number (also very important)

    • The volume and page number of the original nufus entry

The original registration and volume and page number of the original nufus entry is available on the Turkish identity card issued to each Turkish citizen. If the individual needing the birth record does not have this information, ask them whether they have any nufus (census) papers, Turkish identification card or other papers issued to them or their parents. Examine these for the identifying information noted above. If the information is not completely available, assume no record is available and develop for other evidence.
