GN 01708.120 How to Determine Months of German Coverage

A. Introduction

Periods of coverage shown on German certifications may or may not be continuous, i.e., the worker may not have contributed for every month in the period.

B. Procedure - Years with one period of coverage

Determine the number of months of coverage as follows:

  • If there is no entry in the months column, consider the “from - to” period to be continuous with coverage for all of the months.

  • If the number of months is less than or equal to the actual months in the “from - to” period, accept the number of months entry.

  • If the number of months is greater than the actual months in the “from - to” period, refer to GN 01708.110B.5.

C. Procedure - Years with two or more periods of coverage

Determine the number of months of coverage as follows:

  • If there are no entries in the months column for any periods, consider each period to be continuous with coverage for all of the months.

  • If the number of months is shown for only one period, accept that number as the total for that year. (If the total exceeds the sum of the actual calendar months in all the “from - to” periods for the year, refer to GN 01708.110B.5.

  • If months are shown for more than one period, ensure that they are shown for each period and that the number is less than or equal to the actual number of months in the corresponding period.

  • If periods overlap, apply the above rules but do not credit more than the actual calendar months listed in the “from - to” periods for a year.

Example:

From To Months
01/58 05/58 4
03/58 06/58 4

Note: Even though the number of months is correct for each period, only a total of six calendar months (01/58 - 06/58) have been certified.
