GN 02402.040 Where to Find Routing Transit Numbers (RTNs) and Depositor Account Numbers (DANs) on Account Documentation

A. Introduction to finding RTNs and DANs on checks

The following exhibits will show you where to find RTNs, DANs, or both on checks, account statements, and passbooks.

B. Exhibits

1. MICR coding symbols

MICR is a special type font printed with magnetic ink on the bottom line of checks.

MICR encoded line is used by the banking industry to sort and process checks

On-us symbol – this symbol will be found after the DAN

Dash symbol – this symbol will be found inside the DAN field and should be treated as a dash (-) when you input the DAN to the system

2. Check with check serial number inside the DAN field

  Look for the following information:

  1. a.

    RTN - In exhibit B.2, input “12345678”.

  2. b.

Check serial number - In exhibit B.2, the check serial number, found in the upper right corner, is also coded inside the DAN field. Do not input this number, if you find it.

  3. c.

DAN - In exhibit B.2, input “12312345” for a title II case, and “123 1234 5” for a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) case. Be sure to include the blank spaces in the number for SSI. Do not put dashes in the DAN unless the dash symbol is shown (see exhibit B.3.).

  4. d.

Account title - The name shown on the check should be preprinted or verified with the FI and must meet the account title requirements in GN 02402.050.

3. Check with check serial number outside the DAN field

Look for the following information:

  1. a.

    RTN - In exhibit B.3, input “123456789”.

  2. b.

    DAN - In exhibit B.3, input “123-456-789”.

  3. c.

Check serial number - In exhibit B.3, the check serial number is outside the DAN field, and you can ignore it.

4. Payable through check

Look for the following information:

  1. a.

    Payable through notice.

  2. b.

RTN - In exhibit 4, you would not input the RTN shown in the field because it does not belong to the ODECO Federal Credit Union. Use other means of finding the correct RTN for the ODECO Federal Credit Union (see GN 02402.035A.2.d.).

  3. c.

DAN - In exhibit 4, you would input “123456789012”.

  4. d.

Check serial number - In exhibit B.4, the check serial number is outside the DAN field, and you can ignore it.

5. Account statement

Look for DAN in exhibit B.5, you would input “100349750-00-8”. The RTN is not shown on an account statement, so use other means of finding the RTN (see GN 02402.035A.2.d.)

6. Savings account passbook

Look for DAN in exhibit B.6, you would input “25-00130-6”. The RTN is not shown on a savings account passbook, so use other means of finding the RTN (see GN 02402.035A.2.d.).
