Each Social Security office in North Dakota has a (1) “Red Book” listing North Dakota
veterans during World War II and the Korean conflict; and (2) “Blue Book” listing
veterans during the Vietnam era. Both of these books list the veteran, dates of entry
to active service, date of discharge, and type of discharge.
The information listed in the “Red Book” and in the “Blue Book, Section I,” is sufficient
to meet the “other evidence” criteria as proof of military service. However, Section
II of the “Blue Book,” according to the description in the forward, contains only
information limited to the name and date of entry into service from North Dakota.
This evidence alone will not suffice unless it is supported by additional evidence
(e.g., the date and place of separation).
The “Red Book” and “Blue Book” are not preferred evidence and are to be used only
when the preferred evidence is not submitted or available.
