The Act, as amended in 1961 by the Peace Corps Act (PL 87-293), provides Social Security
coverage for citizens and nationals of the U.S. enrolled as volunteers or volunteer
leaders in the Peace Corps. Volunteers and volunteer leaders enrolled in the Peace
Corps are also covered while detained, assigned or otherwise made available by the
President of the U.S. to any Federal agency or State or a subdivision thereof, other
governments and departments and agencies thereof, educational institutions, labor
unions, and other types of organizations, individuals and firms.
