The Disability Determination Services (DDS) that made the original determination reviews the file for possible reopening when:
NOTE: The Field Office (FO) will identify these circumstances for the DDS. For further instructions on processing cases where the claimant dies after filing for disability benefits see Death Cases – Table of Contents DI 23510.000.
The claimant's death raises a question as to whether the prior determination should be changed;
The claimant died less than 1 year after a denial or termination of disability; and
The survivor's benefits would be increased by an allowance (or continuance), or there is a potential Disability Insurance Benefit (DIB) underpayment and an individual is eligible to receive the underpayment.
