DI 43510.055 DDS Assistance for Certain Canadian Claims
In 2001, the Office of International Operations (OIO) implemented a pilot to test
the feasibility of allowing certain Disability Determination Services (DDS) to perform
disability development and make the final disability determination for title II claims
Canadian residents file in the United States without signoff by an OIO Foreign Disability
Examiner. The pilot applied to designated border field offices (FO) and DDS in the
Boston, Chicago, Denver, New York, and Seattle regions, and is now a permanent business
process. The permanent business process applies to designated border FOs and all DDSs
in the following States: Alaska, Idaho, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New York,
North Dakota and Washington.
For border FO and DDS processing instructions, see DI 71001.000 – Processing Title II Disability Claims Filed in the United States by Canadian Residents.
