Norway does not pay life social security benefits directly to family members of retirement
or invalidity pensioners. (Supplements are paid to the insured person.) Since there
are no dependent benefits to convert from life to survivors benefits upon the death
of the worker, survivors must file an application in order to become entitled to Norwegian
survivor benefits.
