RM 05004.003 Handling Correspondence With Incorrect Employer Identification Numbers (EINs)

A. INTRODUCTION

You may receive some correspondence involving incorrect EINs. If you do, handle in accordance with the procedure below.

B. PROCEDURE

Follow the instructions below:

1. Correct EIN Located

  • Prepare a dictated letter informing the employer that the EIN he/ she gave is not an EIN or is not assigned to him/her.

NOTE: Do not show the incorrect EIN anywhere  in the letter.

  • Furnish the correct EIN and tell the employer to show it on all future correspondence with SSA.

2. Correct EIN Not Located

  • Prepare a dictated letter as in B.1. paragraph 1 and note above.

  • Tell them to resubmit their request with the exact  name and address under which their reports are filed or their correct EIN if found.
