GN 00312.298 Norway – Vital Statistics Records

A. Procedure – Birth Certificates

When a person moves from the district of their birth, their national registration file, including the original birth registration, is transferred to the new district of residency in Norway.

In larger cities, where the individual does not know the name of the church in the district where they lived, provide the address where they lived. This will be used to identify the church involved.

1. Office to Contact

a. Birth prior to 10/2/82

Priest or minister of the parish where the birth took place; or

National Register Office (Folkregisteret) in the district in which the individual resides, or last resided.

b. Birth after 10/1/82

National Register Officer (Folkregisteret) in the district in which the individual resides, or last resided.

2. Fee

No fee if the request shows the certificate is for Social Security purposes.

B. Procedure – Marriage Records

1. Office to Contact

Priest or minister of the parish in which the event took place or the city judge (Byfogd) where the civil marriage took place.

2. Fee

No fee if the request shows the certificate is for Social Security purposes.

C. Procedure – Death Records

1. Office to Contact

Sheriff, probate court or National Register Office where death occurred.

2. Fee

No fee if the request shows the certificate is for Social Security purposes.

D. Procedure – Divorce Records

1. Office to Contact

a. Divorce Prior to 1950

Ministry of Justice and Police

Oslo, Norway

b. Divorce After 1949

Chief Administrative Officer (Fylkesmannen) of the county which issued the decree.

2. Fee

No fee if the request shows the certificate is for Social Security purposes.
