GN 01715.212 Evidence of Residence for Old Age Security (OAS) Claims

A. Policy

Applicants for OAS benefits must submit evidence to establish periods of residence in Canada after age 18 as well as their legal status under Canadian law during those periods.

B. Description of types of evidence

1. Legal Status

The following types of evidence may be used to establish that a claimant was legally present in Canada.

  • proof of birth in Canada

  • Canadian citizenship card

  • Minister's permit

  • Canadian immigration documents

2. Periods Of Residence

If the applicant has not resided continuously in Canada, the following types of evidence should be submitted to establish the beginning and ending dates of absences from Canada:

  • passports

  • visas

  • U.S. alien receipt card

  • airline, train, bus tickets, etc.

Note: All of above must show entry/departure dates.
