GN 01719.010 Overview of the U.K. Social Security System

A. Introduction

The U.K. Social Security system, known as “National Insurance” in the United Kingdom, operates in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

In addition to the U.K. system, the agreement applies to the Social Security systems of the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. These systems are generally similar to, and closely coordinated with, the much larger U.K. system.

B. Policy

As used in this subchapter, references to the U.K. system include the Isle of Man and Channel Islands systems.
