GN 01737.015 Coverage and Contributions Under the Greek System

A. Introduction

In general, Greek Social Security covers all persons who work in Greece. Most employees are covered under the general Social Security system administered by the Social Security Institute (IKA). Numerous special systems cover workers in specific occupational categories.

B. Policy

1. Compulsory Contributions

Covered employees and their employers as well as self-employed persons are subject to compulsory contributions which are based on a percentage of the worker's earnings.

2. Voluntary Contributions

Greece permits people who are not subject to compulsory contributions and who meet certain qualifying conditions to make voluntary contributions to build future benefit rights.
