GN 01742.310 Korean Agency Requests for Medical Examinations

A. Background

If the NPC requests a medical examination for a U.S. resident, SSA will schedule the examination and send the results to the NPC.

B. Process

The following process is used for obtaining medical examinations for Korea. (See GN 01704.810 for general information on processing requests for medical examinations.)

  • NPC requests for medical examinations are made in item D.3. on form KOR-USA 2. The Koreans will not use special forms to provide detailed information about the type of examination and/or tests they need, but will attach detailed information on a separate sheet.

  • SSA schedules an examination or forwards “pertinent medical evidence” from SSA files.

  • Pertinent medical evidence is evidence that was obtained by SSA in connection with a continuing disability review or a disability claim filed or adjudicated within a year of the date claim filed shown on the foreign agency request or within a year of the date for which the NPC has specifically requested medical evidence.

  • SSA files include claims folders in OIO, in OCO's Megasite or in the caves in Kansas City.

  • SSA requests reimbursement for the cost of medical examinations obtained for Korea using form SSA-1278-KOR (USA/KOR 9). Prepare three copies of this form.

Note: This form may be printed from the SSA Totalization Forms section of the Totalization Resource Kit. Unlike some other electronic forms, it is not interactive and cannot be completed on screen. It must be printed and completed by hand.
