GN 01757.110 Scope of the Agreement with Brazil

A. Benefit programs included under the United States and Brazilian Agreement

The provisions of the agreement that permit applicants to qualify for benefits based on combined United States and Brazilian coverage apply to U.S. and Brazilian old-age, survivor, and disability benefits.

B. Benefit programs not included under the United States and Brazilian agreement

The agreement does not apply to U.S. Medicare benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or special age 72 payments.

C. Taxes under the agreement

The provisions of the agreement that eliminate dual social security coverage and taxes apply to:

  • U.S. Social Security taxes (Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) and Self-Employment Contributions Act (SECA), and

  • Brazilian social security taxes that govern the old-age, survivor, and disability insurance programs.
