GN 01758.315 Brazilian Birth Registration Number

A. Background

The Brazilian liaison agency the National Social Insurance Institute (INSS) uses two registration numbers for an individuals filing for Brazilian benefits. Both the Brazilian Workers Identification Number (NIT) and the Brazilian Individual Taxpayer Registration (CPF) number need to be obtained when a beneficiary is filing for a U.S. Brazil Totalization benefit.

B. The Brazilian Worker’s Identification Number (NIT)

The “Número de Identificação do Trabalhador” (NIT) is an 11 digit number assigned to domestic workers. The NIT number provides identification to workers for INSS purpose.

C. The Brazilian Individual Taxpayer Registration (CPF)

The “Cadastro de Pessoa Físicas” (CPF) is a number assigned by the Brazilian Federal Revenue to both Brazilians and resident aliens who pay taxes or take part, directly or indirectly, in activities that provide revenue for any of the dozens of different types of taxes existing in Brazil. This eleven-digit number can be located in the CPF card issued by the Brazilian Federal Revenue.

NOTE: The CPF number is mandatory in order to meet the requirement for Brazilian Social Security Benefits. Brazilian beneficiaries that do not hold an Individual Tax Payer Registry card can acquire it by submitting the form via the internet at the Brazilian Revenue website.
