Uruguay assigns an ID card for all citizens born in the country who are over 45 days old. The Identification card includes basic information such as last name, date of birth, place of birth, thumbprint and picture. The Ministry of Interior assigns and issues identification numbers and cards.

The ID number consists of seven numbers followed by an extra digit. The format of the number is X.XXX.XXX-X. Older people may have only a six digit number. There is no significance in the break of numbers.

This number is required for initiating any claim for benefits.
