GN 01763.125 Application Process for Benefits under the Agreement with Iceland

Under the agreement with Iceland, the Social Security Administration (SSA) takes applications for both regular and Totalization benefits on behalf of Iceland. SSA also provides limited assistance in obtaining evidence required to support the claim. The agreement modifies the insured status requirements of the Icelandic social insurance system. Under the agreement, if a worker has at least 12 months of Icelandic coverage, but not enough to receive a benefit, then Iceland can count the U.S. periods of work to permit the worker to qualify for Icelandic Totalization benefits.

For more information about eligibility requirements for Icelandic benefits, see GN 01763.020.
