GN 02402.080 Direct Deposit and Mailing Address

A. Introduction

SSA needs a current mailing address so that we can provide information about benefits and request information about continuing eligibility. Both the MBR and SSR can display the FI financial institution routing and account information as well as the mailing address for the beneficiary.

EXCEPTION: When a title II beneficiary is living in a country where SSA does not yet have International Direct Deposit, he/she may complete a power of attorney (FMS 233) to have checks mailed to an FI outside the U.S. In this case, the FI address will be displayed in the mailing address field on the MBR. The only field available for the residence address is a special message field.

B. Procedure

When adding, changing, or canceling direct deposit, verify that the correct mailing address is on the MBR/SSR. Correct the address if necessary. Tell the beneficiary to notify SSA if the address changes, whether or not the direct deposit information changes.
