GN 02408.004 General Information on Stop-Payments for Checks

SSA uses a stop-payment to request that the Department of the Treasury (DT) determine the status of a check payment that was issued but not due. Non-entitlement occurs when checks are issued after the death of the beneficiary/recipient or for reasons other than death (see Stop Payment – Non-Entitlement Due To Death – Checks GN 02408.005 and Stop Payment – Non-Entitlement for Reasons Other Than Death – F-stops – Checks GN 02408.020).

NOTE: Stop-payment actions only apply to checks that are still negotiable; i.e., within 12 months of the issue date of the check. For checks that are 13 months or older, only a photocopy request (K or L-stop) or a status request (M-stop) processes. For photocopy instructions, see GN 02406.140B.
