TN 52 (12-24)
GN 03103.050 Information about Hearing Locations
We hold hearings in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Northern Mariana
Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands. For in person
and agency video appearances, we generally hold the hearings within 75 miles of the
claimant's residence. However, residents of Alaska, Hawaii, and some western States
may have to travel farther.
When claimants live outside the 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Northern
Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and the Virgin Islands they must
travel to the hearing at their own expense.
NOTE: Prior to scheduling a hearing, the Office of Hearings Operations (OHO) will notify
claimants that OHO may schedule them to appear at a hearing by audio, agency video,
or if the claimant agrees, by online video. Claimants and appointed representatives
have 30 days from receipt of the notice to object, in writing, to the claimant’s appearance
by audio or agency video, or agree in writing, to an appearance by online video.
A hearing usually consists of an ALJ review of the case, and claimants and their representatives,
if any, are encouraged to attend the hearing.
For information concerning payment of travel expenses, see
GN 03101.140 Appeals of Payment for Certain Travel Expenses, and
GN 03103.060 Payment of Certain Travel Expenses to Hearings.
