HI 00610.306 Pneumococcal Vaccine and Its Administration

Prior to the enactment of P.L. 96-611 all vaccinations or inoculations were excluded from coverage as “immunizations” unless they were directly related to the treatment of an injury or direct exposure to a disease or condition, such as antirabies treatment, tetanus antitoxin, etc. Effective July 1, 1981 Part B of Medicare pays 100 percent of the reasonable charges for pneumococcal pneumonia vaccine and its administration to a patient if it is ordered by a physician who is a doctor of medicine or osteopathy.
