NL 00715.500 Dual Entitlement Guide Language — AERO

A. Procedure

The AERO system cannot produce complete notices in dual entitlement situations where rounding causes a $1.00 decrease in the combined payment due to rounding. Include the following language as appropriate.

1. Introductory Paragraph

RIN037

2. New Combined Monthly Payment

“Your new combined monthly payment amount effective (COM) is $      (combined amount payable after rounding)”.

3. Explanation Of Why Combined Monthly Payment Is $1.00 Less

“The new benefit amount on your own Social Security record is ($342.80) and your benefit amount as a spouse is ($94.50). Each benefit is rounded down to the dollar before we pay it to you. Rounding has caused your combined payment to be $1.00 less.”

4. If There Is No Underpayment To Offset The Overpayment Caused By Rounding

Do not include language about the overpayment. The overpayment is automatically waived and we do not need to notify the beneficiary of this.

5. If Previous Increase Used To Recover Overpayment And Net Underpayment Remains

“Rounding has also caused you to be overpaid ($      ) for   (month/year)  through  (month/year) . We have recovered this overpayment from the increase of ($      ) due you from   (month/year)  through  (month/year) .”

To explain amount of net underpayment use:

  • ADJ024 or ADJ025, if payment continues

  • OCO001, if one-check-only

6. If Previous Increase Does Not Completely Offset Overpayment Caused By Rounding

“Rounding has also caused you to be overpaid ($      ) for (   (month/year)  ) through  (month/year) . We have used the increase of ($      ) due you from  (month/year)  through  (month/year)  to reduce this overpayment to ($      ). You do not have to pay this back.”

7. If SMI Premiums Deducted

Use HIB187

8. Closing Paragraphs

Use ALS020 and REF008
