Pay.gov is an online collection application developed and maintained by the Department of the Treasury (Treasury). The internet remittance application offers Title II beneficiaries and Title XVI recipients, who are active in the Recovery and Collection of Overpayment Process (RECOOP) system, the option to repay their programmatic overpayments via credit card, debit card, or through a debit to their bank account or automated clearinghouse (ACH). Treasury’s Pay.gov application collects and processes the transaction and payment information on SSA’s behalf.
Overpaid individuals, who are active in RECOOP, receive a RECOOP billing notice with updated language that includes a newly created Remittance ID, the Pay.gov link, and an updated Payment Stub indicating ways to repay. The user can access the Pay.gov link directly and input the necessary information, including the Remittance ID.
Direct all program-related and technical questions to your Regional Office (RO) support staff or Program Service Center (PSC) Operations Analysis (OA) staff. RO support staff or PSC OA staff may refer questions, concerns, or problems to their Central Office contacts.
