A. Purpose
This emergency message provides information concerning potential inquiries from the public about certain notices involving Medicare information that contain an incorrect telephone number for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) National Medicare 800#.

    B. Background

As a result of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015 mandate to remove the Social Security number from Medicare cards, SSA created and updated several universal text identifiers containing information about Medicare. Effective April 1, 2018, we began sending notices containing updated Medicare information and included the CMS National Medicare 800#. We discovered some notices sent to beneficiaries contained the incorrect National Medicare 800#. The correct National Medicare 800# is 1-800-633-4227.

The impacted notice systems include T2R, MCS, MADCAP, AURORA, and BEVE/iBEVE.

    C. Procedures for FO and National 800 Number Network (N8NN)

If technicians receive an inquiry regarding the incorrect National Medicare contact number, the technician should apologize to the customer for the inconvenience and provide the correct National Medicare contact number (1-800-633-4227).

Direct all program-related and technical questions to your Regional Office (RO) support staff or Program Service Center (PSC) Operations Analysis (OA) staff. RO support staff or PSC OA staff may refer questions, concerns or problems to their Central Office contacts.
