Background

SSA will introduce the internet Social Security Replacement Card (iSSNRC) name change replacement cards service to the public. We will be expanding the current iSSNRC capability/functionality to online customers who request last name changes based on their marriage, by using a real-time electronic verification of an individual’s state marriage data. This marriage data verification service will allow iSSNRC to issue name-change replacement SSN cards without examining physical marriage documents and eliminate the need for the applicant to visit a local office. The first public release is planned for Arkansas on April 23, 2022.

A. Description of Internet SSN Replacement Cards (iSSNRC)

Internet Social Security Number Replacement Card (iSSNRC) is a secure automated Social Security Number (SSN) application process, which allows members of the public who meet certain criteria to apply for a no change SSN replacement card or last name change replacement SSN card due to marriage electronically. As part of the online application, the Social Security Administration (SSA) compares an applicant’s SSN against SSA sources and non-SSA sources, commonly referred to as internal (i.e., SSA) and external (i.e., non-SSA) sources of information. We compare an applicant’s SSN and biographical data (e.g., name, date of birth) submitted with the online application to the Numberholder’s Numident record. In addition, SSA verifies applicant information with external (non-SSA) data sources. For example, we verify the applicant’s U.S. issued driver’s license, state issued Identification card, or marriage data with the issuing state of record.

B. Criteria to apply for an SSN Replacement card via iSSNRC

To be eligible to apply for a no change or last name change replacement SSN card due to marriage via iSSNRC the applicant must meet all the following criteria:

  • be a U.S. citizen with his or her U.S. citizenship established on the SSN record;

  • be 18 years of age or older when applying through iSSNRC;

  • have a “mySocialSecurity” online account; (http://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/);

  • request an SSN replacement card that requires no change to the SSN record;

  • request an SSN replacement card that requires the last name change to the SSN record due to marriage (this criteria is only applicable to the applicant applying to change the last name due to marriage);
