PROGRAM OPERATIONS MANUAL SYSTEMPart GN – GeneralChapter 017 – Totalization BenefitsSubchapter 39 – Agreement with ChileTransmittal No. 2, 06/25/2021
The Office of Data Exchange, Policy Publications, and International Negotiations is now responsible for negotiating and implementing bilateral Social Security agreements. Accordingly, we are revising existing Totalization POMS sections to account for new component names, addresses, and workload processes. We also updated these instructions to meet the Agency's plain language requirements.
Summary of Changes
GN 01739.225 Requests for Status of Application for Chilean Benefits
We created this new section to provide instructions for handling status requests for claims for Chilean benefits filed with the Social Security Administration, Division of International Operations.
When the Division of International Operations (DIO) forwards information about a Chilean claim, certified copies of evidence, and a copy of the worker’s U.S. coverage record to Chile, the Benefit Earnings Technician (BET) electronically stores the claims material in the Paperless Processing Center (PPC) system in DIO before forwarding the claim to the Chilean agency. The system automatically generates a claims status notice that the BET sends to the applicant.
If an applicant contacts the Social Security Administration (SSA) for status of his or her claim for Chilean benefits and states that he or she has not received notification that DIO forwarded a claim to the Chilean agency, check the PPC system. NOTE: Field offices are able to check the PPC system through the Paperless ROQS (Read Only Query System), accessible via iMain.
If PPC does not show that DIO forwarded the claim to Chile, advise the applicant to write directly to DIO at the following address:
If PPC shows that DIO forwarded the claim to the Chilean agency, advise the applicant to contact the Chilean agency directly. Applicants can find contact and other information online at:
Social Security Institute
DIO is unable to determine the status of Chilean a claim after a technician forwards the claim to Chile. For more information about status requests for Totalization claims, see GN 01702.520.
