The Office of Data Exchange, Policy Publications, and International Negotiations is responsible for negotiating and implementing bilateral Social Security agreements. Accordingly, we have revised existing Totalization POMS sections to account for new component names, addresses, and workload processes. We have also updated these instructions to meet the Agency's plain language requirements.
Summary of Changes
GN 01721.225 Requests for Status of Application for Spanish Benefits
We created this section to provide instructions for handling status requests for Totalization claims for Spanish benefits that are filed with the Social Security Administration, Division of International Operations in the United States.
When the Division of International Operations (DIO) forwards information about a Spanish claim, certified copies of evidence, and a copy of the worker’s U.S. coverage record to Spain, the Benefit Earnings Technician (BET) electronically stores the claims material in the Paperless Processing Center (PPC) system in DIO before forwarding the claim to the Spanish agency. The system automatically generates a notice that the BET sends to the applicant.
If an applicant contacts the Social Security Administration (SSA) for status of his or her claim for Spanish benefits and states that he or she has not received notification that DIO forwarded a claim to the Spanish agency, check the PPC system. NOTE: Field offices are able to check the PPC system through the Paperless ROQS (Read Only Query System), accessible via iMain.
If PPC does not show that DIO forwarded the claim to Spain, advise the applicant to write directly to DIO at the following address:
If PPC shows DIO forwarded the claim to the Spanish agency, advise the applicant to contact the Spanish agency directly. Applicants can find contact and other information online at:

Migration, and Social Security
DIO is unable to determine the status of Spanish claims after a technician forwards the claim to Spain. For more information about status requests for Totalization claims, see GN 01702.520.
