Background
We are updating our Program Operations Manual System (POMS) to highlight that the field office (FO) can no longer verify, certify or obtain free copy of birth or death record from the Rhode Island Center for Vital Records (RI CVR). In addition, we revised the language throughout the POMS section for clarity, removed outdated information and provided the RI CVR link for the most current information..

Subsection A - We removed the cost of copy for divorce, marriage, birth and death records.
Subsection B.1. - We updated the address for the RI Center for Vital Records.

We removed the cost of copy information from this subsection. This information can be found on the RI CVR website.
We added the information from subsection B.4, to this subsection.
We changed the information to state that the FO cannot verify, certify or obtain free copy of birth or death record.
We added language about using the Electronic Verification of Vital Events (EVVE) for verification of vital records.
Subsection B.3. - We removed the type of payment information from this subsection. This information can be found on the RI CVR website.
Subsection B.4. - We deleted this subsection and moved the information to B.2.
Divorce records are available from the Clerk of the Family Court where the divorce was granted. Marriage, birth and death records are available from the Town Clerk in the town or City Clerk in the city where the event took place.

The State office no longer has an index of divorce records. Divorce records must be requested from the clerk of the Family Court that issued the decree.
Requests for birth certificates for illegitimate children must be accompanied by a consent statement signed by the subject individual (if 18 or over) or by the parent or guardian.
Expedited mail requests are processed within one week. Same day service is available in emergencies only by calling (401) 277-2812 and using a Visa charge card.
Can the FO verify, certify or obtain free copy of birth or death record? No.
Technicians requiring verification of vital records for the State of Rhode Island are to use the Electronic Verification of Vital Events (EVVE). If a certified record is needed, it can be requested directly from Rhode Island Center for Vital Records.
