RS 02002.142 Processing Requests for Special Exceptions under the Agreement with Denmark

A. Process for requesting a special exception

A worker or employer who wishes to apply for a special exception must write to the agency in the country where coverage is desired.

1. U.S. coverage desired

If U.S. coverage is desired, the letter should be sent to:

Social Security Administration
Division of Training and Program Support
International Support Branch
P.O. Box 17741
Baltimore, Maryland 21235-7741
USA
Fax: (410) 966-1861
Request online: https://opts.ssa.gov

2. Danish coverage desired

If Danish coverage is desired, the letter should be sent to:

The National Social Security Agency
6. Division, International Office
Landemærket 11
DK-1119 Copenhagen
DENMARK

3. Contents of letter

The letter requesting the exception should provide:

  • an explanation of why an exception should be granted, and

  • all of the information needed to issue a certificate of coverage.

The agency receiving the request coordinates with the other agency if it believes an exception should be granted. When an exception is granted, the agency of the country that covers the worker issues a certificate of coverage to serve as proof of exemption from coverage and taxes in the other country.
