A. Description of listing of impairments

The Listing of Impairments (the listings) describes medical conditions that we consider severe enough to prevent a person with a disability from doing any gainful activity, regardless of age, education, or work experience. The listings, divided into major body systems, help to ensure that disability determinations and decisions have a sound medical basis and provide consistency throughout the country.

For the current listings, see DI 34000.000.

B. Impairment(s) meets a listing

If a claimant has a medically determinable physical or mental impairment(s) that:

  • is listed in DI 34000.000, and

  • satisfies all of the criteria in a specified listing, and

  • meets the duration requirement,

then the claimant’s impairment(s) meets a listing and we will find the claimant is disabled or continues to be disabled.

Most of the listed impairments are permanent or expected to result in death. Some listings state a specific period of time for which the impairment(s) will meet the listing. For all others, the evidence must show that the impairment has lasted, or can be expected to last, for a continuous period of at least 12 months.

C. Impairment(s) medically equals a listing

If a claimant’s impairment(s) does not meet the criteria of a listing, you must consider if it medically equals the criteria of any listing. To medically equal a listing, the findings of the claimant’s impairment(s) must be at least equal in severity and duration to the criteria of any listed impairment. For a more detailed discussion of how we structure the listings and how we determine whether a claimant’s impairment(s) meets or medically equals a listed impairment, see DI 24505.015.
