A. Introduction to vital statistics records in Costa Rica

Costa Rica has a single, nationwide repository of civil registration records. Records are held by the National Registry in the Vital Registry. The registry is part of the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (the supreme electoral authority of Costa Rica). In addition, the National Registry has several physical offices (local Registro Civil offices) in municipalities throughout the country where individuals can visit in person.

B. Procedure for requesting birth, marriage, divorce, and death records

1. Office to contact

For birth, marriage, and death records, contact the local civil registration offices where the event took place or the National Registry. For divorce records, contact the district court where the divorce was granted.

Individuals can access records online at from the National Registry at https://registronacional.go.cr or http://www.tse.go.cr/. Requests from the National Registry may take several weeks to process requests for vital records.

Include the following information in requests for records (whether in person or online):

  • Individual's name;

  • Type of record requested;

  • Reason for request; and

  • Relevant dates or information.

When requesting records from the Registro Civil offices, write a brief request to the proper office in Spanish. Use this address guide below, replacing the information in parentheses.
