GN 01715.221 Requests for Status of Application for Canadian Benefits

A. Introduction

When the Office of International Operations (OIO) forwards the completed Canadian application form(s), certified copies of evidence and a copy of the applicant’s U.S. coverage record (if necessary) to Canada, OIO annotates the Modernized Development Worksheet (MDW) screen to show the type of claim, the date the claim was forwarded and that a notice was sent to the applicant.

B. Procedure

Take the following steps if the applicant contacts an SSA field office for the status of his or her claim for Canadian benefits:

  1. 1.

Check the MDW screen to see if OIO has sent the claim to Canada.

  2. 2.

If OIO hasn’t completed the MDW screen, advise the applicant to write directly to OIO at the address shown in GN 01715.220C.

  3. 3.

If OIO has completed the MDW screen, advise the applicant to write directly to the Canadian agency shown on the notice he or she received from OIO when the claim was forwarded. (Canadian agency addresses can be found in GN 01716.220D.)
