The verification procedures in SI 00830.400D were developed by staff in SSA Central Office and ACF (Administration for Children and Families). The national agreement allowed the regions to replace the written verification requirement in SI 00830.400D.8 with procedure based on local agreements.

The State agencies for AFDC/TANF in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska have agreed that AFDC and TANF information should be verified orally. Therefore, there is no requirement for written confirmation from the AFDC/TANF agency. The contact should be made with the local agency and should be documented with a report of contact or on the appropriate MSSICS screen.

EXCEPTION: If the local AFDC/TANF agency (e.g. St Louis DFS) requires written requests for verification, follow the procedure negotiated between the local offices. Written verification can be used in lieu of oral verification if necessary to accommodate arrangements with local offices.
