Determine an existing SSN from:
-
•
The Alphabetical
Identification
(ALPHIDENT
query) (RM 10235.035),
-
•
The
NUMIDENT
query to verify that number(s) located by the ALPHIDENT query belong to the claimant (RM
10240.005, RM 10240.030, and RM 10240.040.)
If you cannot locate the SSN via queries, ask whether the SSN could be on record with
a local source such as a former employer. If so, encourage the claimant to contact
the source immediately for the SSN.
If you are unable to locate an SSN, obtain an SS-5 to assign one.
NOTE: Foreign claimants often will not know the SSN of the worker on whose record they
are applying for benefits. Even if an SSN is known, do not overlook the possibility
of multiple numbers.
