Any SSI (Title XVI) payments due a beneficiary in an institution receiving Medicaid funds are for personal needs only and may not be used for institutional charges for care.

Advise institutions of their payee responsibilities regarding proper use and conservation of benefits and the effect accumulated funds have upon SSI resource limits and continued eligibility for SSI benefits. The FO will contact institutional officials if it is aware that the personal funds of a beneficiary are being conserved and will shortly exceed $1,600. Where funds are accumulating for a number of beneficiaries without regard to the beneficiaries' needs, work with the regional programs staff and the institutional officials to resolve the problem.
