The French Social Security system provides a wide range of benefits including retirement,
survivors and disability benefits. To qualify for French benefits, a worker must meet
minimum length-of-coverage or recency-of-work requirements that vary depending on
the type of benefit. Under the French general system, retirement pensions and some
types of survivors benefits may be paid based on as little as one calendar quarter
of contributions. Benefit amounts are based on the length of time the worker contributed
to the French system and the level of his/her earnings.
