GN 01725.010 Overview of the Dutch Social Security System
The Dutch Social Security system provides benefits through three separate programs:
-
•
The National Insurance Scheme (NIS) pays retirement and survivors (OASI) benefits and certain family and medical benefits.
OASI benefits are based on flat-rate amounts that are unrelated to the NH's past earnings.
-
•
The Employed Persons Insurance Scheme (EPIS) pays earnings-related disability benefits and also pays unemployment and cash sickness
benefits.
-
•
The Self-Employed Persons Insurance Scheme (SPIS) pays earnings-related disability benefits to self-employed persons and other professionals
who are not covered by the EPIS.
To qualify for Dutch benefits, a person must meet minimum residence or length-of-work
requirements that vary depending on the type of benefit.
