Peritoneoscopy (generally available since September 1981)
This is an improved diagnostic technique because it permits the visualization of the
peritoneal cavity and the peritoneal surfaces of intra-abdominal organs such as liver,
ovaries, and uterus. It is useful in obtaining direct liver biopsies and in the detection
of intra-abdominal malignancies or metastases.
