A. Introduction

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has numerous programs which make payments to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) applicants, recipients, and their families. For SSI purposes, the treatment of those VA payments depends on the nature of the payments. The most common types of VA payments are explained in the following sections:

B. Procedure

Explore the possibility of receipt of, or potential eligibility for, a VA payment, whenever it comes to your attention that a claimant or recipient is:

  • A veteran;

  • The child or spouse of a disabled or deceased service person or veteran;

  • An unmarried spouse of a deceased service person or veteran;

  • The dependent parent of a disabled service person or veteran, see SI 00830.314C.9;

  • The surviving parent of a service person or veteran who died from a service-connected cause, see SI 00830.314C.10.

NOTE: The Social Security Act requires that an applicant or recipient who is potentially eligible for some VA benefits must apply for those benefits. For more information, see SI 00510.001, Overview of the Filing for Other Program Benefits Requirement.
