Some HHA's participate in training programs in which they utilize student nurses enrolled
in a school of nursing to perform skilled nursing services in the home setting. If
an HHA participating in such a training program assigns a student nurse to provide
skilled nursing services in the patient's home, the costs of their services are reimbursable
as skilled nursing care. The services must be performed under the
general supervision of a registered professional nurse who is either an employee of the HHA
or the school of nursing in which the student is enrolled. However, the supervising
nurse need not accompany the student on each visit. This represents a special exception
to the requirement that skilled nursing services must be rendered by or under the
direct supervision of a licensed nurse. (See HI 00601.400 for counting of visits when the supervisor accompanies the student on a visit.)
