RS 01601.220 Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) Claim Numbers

A. Introduction of RRB claim numbers

Until April 1, 1964, the RRB and the Social Security Administration (SSA) used different identification systems. A RRB claim number had six digits and a prefix. Beginning in April 1964, the RRB began using social security numbers (SSNs).

B. Description of RRB claim numbers

A RRB claim number contains the prefix and suffix codes reflected below, based on the type of benefit. The “Prefix” codes appear only on RR records and documents, and not on SSAs records. The “Numeric Code Suffix” appear on the MBR, and not on any RR records or documents.

NOTE: Show the RRB claim number, if known, along with the SSNs involved on all material sent to the RRB.
