DI 10105.090 Benefit Information

A. Current entitlement

When a number holder (NH) becomes entitled to a Disability Insurance Benefit (DIB) (after 1960 for a female, after 1974 for a male), the DIB Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) is computed as if:

  • The NH had attained age 62 in the first month of the waiting period or (if there is no waiting period) in the first month for which he/she is entitled to a DIB; and

  • The NH had filed a Retirement Insurance Benefit (RIB) application when the DIB application was filed.

Prior to November 1972, the DIB PIA for a male was computed as though he had reached age 65 as of the points listed above. (See RS 00605.210 through RS 00605.535 for the full discussion of DIB computations in current entitlement.)

B. Entitlement prior to 1961

Where the NH became entitled (i.e., had filed and met eligibility requirements) to a DIB before 1961, the monthly DIB was equal to the PIA computed under the rules that would apply if the individual had attained retirement age and filed application for an RIB in the first month of the waiting period. If the NH was entitled to a DIB without a waiting period, the DIB was equal to the PIA computed as though he/she had attained retirement age and filed for an RIB in the first month of entitlement to a DIB.

C. Workers' compensation and public disability benefits

Benefits can be reduced when the NH also receives workers' compensation or public disability benefits. (See DI 52101.001.)
