SI 01330.340 Examples - Eligible Child Multiple Deeming

Lives With an Ineligible Parent and an Eligible Parent

Mr. and Mrs. White live together with their son, Paul, who is age 6. Mrs. White is disabled and Paul is blind. Mrs. White applied for SSI for herself and for Paul on August 10, 1988.

The parents have the following resources:

$1,000 - savings belonging to both Mr. and Mrs. White
+ 200 - cash on hand
$1,200 - couple's countable resources

Paul has no resources of his own.

The resource computation follows:

$1,200 - couple's countable resources
-2,850 - couple's resource limit (in 1988)
0

Mrs. White meets the resource eligibility requirement. Therefore, there are no parental resources to deem to Paul, and Paul also meets the resource eligibility requirement.

Lives With Both Parents - One Parent is Not Applying for SSI - one Parent Applies for SSI, But Does Not Meet Resource Eligibility Requirement

Mr. and Mrs. Ryder live together with their daughter, Mary, who is age 14. Mrs. White applied for SSI for herself and for Mary on May 15, 1988.

Mary owns United States savings bonds worth $200.

The parents have the following resources:

$2,000 - savings belonging to both Mr. and Mrs. Ryder
 900 - countable household goods and personal effects
+ 200 - cash on hand
$3,100 - couple's countable resources

The resource computation follows:

$3,100 - couple's countable resources
-2,850 - couple's resource limit (in 1988)
$ 250 - excess resources

Mrs. Ryder does not meet the resource eligibility requirement.

Since Mrs. Ryder is ineligible for SSI, the resource computation for Mary is as follows:

$3,100 - parents' countable resources
-2,850 - couple's resource limitation (in 1988)
$ 250 - resource value deemed
+ 200 - child's resources
$ 450 - child's countable resources

Since Mary's countable resources do not exceed the resource limit for an individual, Mary meets the resource eligiblity requirements.
