HI 00610.060 Supervising Physicians in the Teaching Setting

Medical insurance covers the services attending physicians (other than interns or residents) render in the teaching setting to individual patients.

These services are performed primarily in hospitals, but may also be performed by attending physicians supervising interns and residents in SNF's.

Payment on the basis of reasonable charges may be made for the professional services rendered to a beneficiary by beneficiary's attending physician when the attending physician provides personal and identifiable direction to interns or residents who are participating in the care of physician's patient.

The amount payable under the program is determined by using the same reasonable charge criteria that apply to the services the physician renders to the physician's other paying patients (see HI 00401.305).
